For the longest time, the 3rd instalment of “Wolverine” was known to fans as “Wolverine 3“. Thanks to the first official movie poster, the final “Wolverine” will simply be called, “Logan”.
That’s right guys, Hugh Jackman has officially put the claws back on. In the poster, the actor’s familiar buff arm can be seen with 3 Wolverine claws extended out. However, the big question isn’t about Wolverine but the small child’s hand clutching onto the clawed mutant. Who exactly is that child?
It’s possible that the child in question is mutant clone X-23, aka Laura Kinney, aka the new Female Wolverine. As Kofi Outlaw points out, the setup is already there. During the “X-Men: Apocalypse” post credits scene, we saw Mister Sinister in possession of Wolverine’s DNA – a valuable item he could easily use to clone X-23.
It does make plenty of sense. Replacing Wolverine with his female counterpart seems like a smarter option, than say, recasting Jackman with another actor to play the iconic X-Men character. No doubt, that will probably pissed off the majority of the “X-Men” movie universe fan base.
According to The Wrap, the events of “Logan” will see a much older Wolverine living out his last days in the future. It is the year 2024 and the birth rate for humankind has started to decline, leading to an overall drop in the mutant population. Logan himself isn’t faring too well. He’s not only sick and self-medicating with alcohol, but his powers are diminishing to the point where sometimes he doesn’t heal at all.
Similarly, Professor X, whose mind has begun to deteriorate, is also growing more unstable with his own powers. It doesn’t help that a sketchy government operation called Transigen is capturing mutant children and turning them into killing machines. One of them, as some of you may have already guess, is X-23, whom Logan ends up mentoring.
Director James Mangold also took to Twitter to reveal the 2nd page of the movie screenplay, basically confirming that the rated-R “Logan”, which is partially based on the popular “Old Man Logan” comic book storyline, will be a “violent” story with shades of a western.
It reads: “In this flick, people will get hurt or killed when shit falls on them. They will get just as hurt or just as killed if they get hit with something big and heavy like, say, a car. Should anyone in our story have the misfortune to fall off a roof or out a window, they won’t bounce. They will die.”
Sound pretty gory and alarming isn’t it? But more importantly, it sounds like a fitting swan song for Jackman before he hangs up his adamantium claws for good.
“Logan” is slated to hit theatres on 3rd March 2017.
