Wonder Girls is considered one of the top South Korean girl groups as they previously took the world by storm with their hit dance track, “Nobody”.
However, the group went on an indefinite hiatus as leader of the group, Sunye, officially announced that she would be marrying her longtime boyfriend, James Park. As Sunye settled down into her new life, the remaining Wonder Girls members fully focused on their solo activities. The girls held their final performance together during the closing ceremony of the Winter Special Olympics in Pyeongchang in 2013.
Amidst their hiatus, several rumours and speculations surfaced online, suggesting that the girls have reunited as they are gearing up to make a long-awaited comeback to the music scene.
On 22nd June, Korean media portal Sports DongA exclusively reported that Wonder Girls have recently wrapped up final productions for their new song. Several music industry officials further told the media portal that the group is planning to record the music video for the song soon. It was further reported that they are expected to release their comeback album as early as July to August because music video filming usually marks the final stage of comeback preparations. The alleged comeback album would mark their first album in 3 years since the release of “Wonder Party” in June 2012.
This isn’t the first time that the girls were reported to be preparing for a comeback as Sunye’s uncle revealed that Sunmi, who left the group in 2010, would rejoin the group to make a comeback with Wonder Girls in the latter half of the year. Sunye is also said to have returned to Korea from Canada recently. Regarding the rumours, JYP Entertainment only stated “nothing was determined yet”.
On 23rd June, the talent agency told Korean media outlet Star News that Sunye has indeed returned to Korea. It is reported that she has only returned to attend a friend’s wedding along with many other celebrities such as Jo Kwon of 2AM and Min of miss A.
They added:
Nothing has been decided regarding Wonder Girls’ comeback. Sunye returned for a personal event. It was not to prepare for Wonder Girls’ comeback.
