One of the worst road accidents in Malaysia occurred on Monday (9th June), when a bus carrying 42 students from Universiti Pendidikan Sultan Idris (UPSI) collided with another vehicle on the East–West Highway and veered off the road. The crash resulted in the deaths of 15 students and one bus attendant.

Reports continue to emerge regarding the fatal accident, with survivors and witnesses sharing their accounts. According to statements from survivors, there was a burning smell prior to the crash, and the bus driver was allegedly speeding. Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim expressed his condolences following the tragedy and has directed the Ministry of Higher Education to coordinate appropriate support for the families affected.

According to The Star, a team from the Perak Fire and Rescue Department was immediately dispatched after receiving a distress call at 1:10am. Director Sayani Saidon reported that of the 15 victims who died, 13 were pronounced dead at the scene, while two others succumbed to their injuries in the hospital. UPSI clarified that the bus was not operated by the university, while the bus company denied claims that the replacement driver was not a qualified bus driver.

The tragic accident has received widespread attention on social media, where many have expressed grief and condolences for the victims and their families. A number of Malaysian celebrities have also extended their condolences to the victims’ families. Among those paying tribute are Biduanita Negara Dato’ Sri Siti Nurhaliza, singers Anuar Zain, Aisha Retno, Zee Avi, and Ella, rapper Caprice, television host Dato’ Aznil Nawawi, actresses Nadia Brian and Sweet Qismina, all of whom shared the news via their respective Instagram Stories.

We at Hype Malaysia extend our deepest condolences to the families who have lost their loved ones in the accident. May they find strength during this difficult time.
