Uh oh, it’s been confirmed that a senior citizen from Petaling Jaya has been infected with Zika virus. His diagnosis is Malaysia’s 8th official recorded Zika case.
Health director-general Datuk Dr Noor Hisham Abdullah told The Star that the Zika infection report was detected through the Zika virus surveillance system.
The 67-year-old man first sought treatment at Tangling Clinic on 30th November after he was down with fever, nausea, and diarrhoea for 2 days. The man returned to the clinic again on 1st December with joint and muscle pain.
After a dengue test report came back negative, the senior citizen’s blood samples were sent to the National Public Health Laboratory (MKAK) in Hospital Sungai Buloh for other flavivirus tests and screening protocol.
A week later, MKAK and the Institute for Medical Research (IMR) confirmed that the man’s blood samples and urine samples tested positive for Zika. According Dr Noor Hisham, the patient’s family members have undergone checks, with blood and urine samples taken to see if they have symptoms of Zika.
