With cameras constantly filming their every action, it’s no surprise that K-Pop idols can’t get away with controversial behaviour. Recently, ZEROBASEONE’s (제로베이스원) Park Gunwook (박건욱) sparked criticism for allegedly manipulating a giveaway during the group’s fansign event.

The incident took place at the K-Pop group’s recent fansign in Seoul. According to reports, the idol was tasked with announcing the winner of an exclusive Polaroid, drawing the winning number at random. However, video footage from fans at the event hints that Park Gunwook allegedly announced a different number from the one he drew.

Some fans alleged that the number he called out belonged to a familiar fan. As such, the incident sparked accusations that he changed the result to a preferred fan, rather than the actual winner. As the controversy grew, fans and netizens began slamming Park Gunwook for his questionable actions.

Unfortunately, the issue also snowballed into more allegations of bad behaviour. Some netizens criticised Park Gunwook for the unpleasant way he yawned during the fansign, noting that he should’ve been more conscious about his idol image. Meanwhile, a post allegedly depicting him walking away after accidentally kicking down a traffic cone also went viral.

Park Gunwook would later apologise for the lottery incident, saying he should’ve exercised more caution and better judgment during the incident. He also acknowledged that his action caused hurt and confusion to the fans, adding that he will sincerely reflect on his mistake. Notably, the letter doesn’t directly mention the alleged rigging.

Fans and netizens have reacted to the apology, expressing mixed emotions. While some accepted the apology and urged the public to move on, others argued that Park Gunwook should be held accountable for his actions because of the negative effects. Some also lamented how the idol never specified his mistake in his letter, which could lead to confusion.

Given how the public will scrutinise idols for even the smallest of issues, it’s no surprise that Park Gunwook faced backlash for this rather serious matter. Let’s hope the idol will truly reflect on his actions and not repeat them.
