Vin Diesel is certainly looking to bring more diversity to the cast of his 3rd “xXx” movie because according to Twitchfilm, action movie legends Jet Li and Tony Jaa set to star in the threequel.
Indian actress Deepika Padukone is also joining the cast and it is said that she “will be lining up with the good guys”. Details regarding Li and Jaa’s roles are undisclosed.
Directed by Rob Cohen, the original “xXx” (pronounced “Triple X”) movie was released in 2002. The American action film stars Diesel as Xander “XXX” Cage, a former extreme sports athlete and a stuntman who turned into a reluctant spy for the National Security Agency. He is sent on a dangerous mission to infiltrate a group of potential Russian terrorists in Central Europe.
“xXx” marked the 2nd time that both Cohen and Diesel have worked together as Cohen directed the first “Fast and Furious” movie. It was a box office success and managed to spawn a sequel. However, Diesel did not star in it as he was filming “The Pacific” at the time. The sequel, which starred as Ice Cube as the new lead character, was a box office failure and received negative responses from critics.
Tentatively titled “XXX: The Return of Xander Cage”, the upcoming threequel has been in the works for years.
D.J. Caruso will direct it and the most recent draft of the script was written by “Terminator Salvation” scribes Michael Ferris and John Brancato. The “Furious” series mastermind Neal H. Moritz will produce it alongside Diesel, who is returning to star in the lead role.
Samuel L. Jackson (of “The Avengers” and “Pulp Fiction” fame), who played NSA Agent Gibbons in the first film, will return to reprise his role. UFC star Conor McGregor is joining the cast for an unspecified role.
This will not be the first time that Jaa is starring alongside Diesel because both of them worked together on “Furious 7“.
Padukone is one of the highest paird actors in the Indian movie world, but she will be making her Hollywood debut via her role in the new “xXx” movie. Li is no stranger to Hollywood as he previously appeared in a number of American action films including “The Expendables” franchise.
