#XMenApocalypse: Kodi Smit-McPhee Joins Cast As Young Nightcrawler

by Adrina
February 18, 2015

Director Bryan Singer may have already announced the new cast members for the upcoming “X-Men” films but the search for the young actors is not over.

As “X-Men: Apocalypse” will set its story in the 80s (a decade after “X-Men: Days of Future Past“), a slew of young mutants are expected to make their cameo appearances. Nightcrawler, an X-Men character with the ability to teleport, is included as well because Singer announced on his Instagram account that Kodi Smit-McPhee is joining the cast of the upcoming “X-Men” film as the young Nightcrawler.

Kodi Smit-McPhee (real name: Kodi Andrew Johan Smit) is best known for his role as Owen in horror movie “Let Me In”. The 19-year-old Australian actor lent his voice in animated feature film “ParaNorman” as Norman Babcock and earned various awards and nominations for his roles in “Romulus, My Father” and “The Road”. He was also one of the main actors in last year’s “The Dawn of the Planet of the Apes“.

Before any movie website could even predict the mutants that will appear in “X-Men: Apocalypse”, Singer himself broke the news that Kodi Smit-McPhee will join “Game of Thrones” actress Sophie Turner, Tye Sheridan, and Alexandra Shipp (of “Aaliyah: The Princess of R&B” fame) as part of the X-Men franchise.

Created by Len Wein and Dave Cockrum, the mutant made his first comic book appearance in “Giant Size X-Men” #1 back in 1975. The older version of the mutant was previously portrayed by Alan Cumming in Singer’s “X2”.

James McAvoy, Michael Fassbender, Jennifer Lawrence, and Nicholas Hoult will return to reprise their respective “X-Men: Days of Future Past” roles. Oscar Isaac has joined the cast to play the titular villain Apocalypse, who is widely believed to be the first mutant and the oldest mutant in the X-Men Universe. Rose Byrne will reprise her role as Moira MacTaggert while newcomers Alexandra Shipp, Sophie Turner, and Tye Sheridan will play the young versions of of Storm, Jean Grey, and Cyclops.

Bryan Singer directed “X-Men: Apocalypse” based on a screenplay written by Simon Kinberg, Mike Dougherty, and Dan Harris. The movie will begin filming in Montreal in April this year before its release on 27th May 2016. The young Australian actor will be seen next in Nine Network’s 8-part drama series “Gallipoli” in 2015.
