#XMen: Is “Supernova” Movie Going To Be A Dark Phoenix Reboot?

The past few “X-Men” movies have been underwhelming, to say the least. We know that production for the “Deadpool” sequel is currently underway, and a spinoff film called “New Mutants” will introduce a new team of young mutants on the big screen.

But other than that, fans have pretty much been kept in the dark about 20th Century Fox’s plans for the primary “X-Men” franchise. Recently, a production listing uncovered “X-Men: Supernova” as the next “X-Men” movie, which is now being rumoured to be a reboot of the Dark Phoenix storyline.

The Dark Phoenix saga, involving Jean Grey being possessed by a very powerful cosmic entity, was largely told in 2003’s “X-2: X-Men United” and 2006’s “X-Men: The Last Stand”. However, a brand new timeline was created after the events of 2014’s “X-Men: Days of Future Past”, where Jean Grey was still alive in the present.

Jean Grey‘s Dark Phoenix was even teased in last year’s climactic sequence of “X-Men: Apocalypse” when her powers were in full display. The connection between “Supernova” and the phoenix imagery makes too much sense to ignore.

While “X-Men: Apocalypse” closes out the trilogy in the 1980s, it was revealed that the next instalment will take place in the 90s. “Another thing that’s been introduced in the comics is a big alien, interstellar tenant within the ‘X-Men’ universe that hasn’t been explored. And to me, that might be kind of fun because I’m a huge ‘Star Wars’ and ‘Star Trek’ fan, and exploring the X-Men universe and being able to utilise that would be exciting, visually,” said director Bryan Singer.

Having said that, Comic Book Resources suggested that “X-Men: Supernova” could be based on a 2007 comic book of the same name, where Rogue leads a team of mutants against the Children of the Vault – a cousin species of modern humans who feel entitled that they deserve to rule over Earth. But unless a new Rogue is introduced in the next sequel, this seems unlikely.

It’s worth noting that “X-Men: Supernova” may just be a working title and nothing more, so do take this news with a grain of salt. However, it’s been confirmed that a sequel to “X-Men: Apocalypse” in the works. A reboot of the Dark Phoenix sage would definitely prick up a lot of people’s interest though.
