There’s a saying which goes, “crime doesn’t pay”. And, unfortunately for this Malaysian woman, she had to learn this lesson after committing theft in broad daylight!

A lady had apparently been rather enamoured by a ring while shopping at Publika. As a result, she apparently slipped it into her bag while no one was looking. Regretfully for her, all her actions were caught on tape!

The woman’s actions went viral after someone uploaded the footage to Facebook. The post, found in the Facebook group 我们是马来西亚人 We are Malaysians, explained that the incident had taken place at Publika around 1pm on 1st January. “Who’s friend stole the silver ring?” the post teasingly asked.

According to the videos, the lady had been browsing a jewellery stall in Publika. After trying on a few pieces, she evidently found one she liked; a silver ring. However, it seems she wasn’t willing to pay for it. The woman sneakily hid it in her palm after taking it off, then slid it into her bag when she assumed no one was looking.

Unfortunately for her, a security camera hidden in the corner of the stall had caught the whole incident. Additionally, the footage also managed to capture her face. The released footage prompted netizens to start their own cyber investigations to track down the perpetrator.

To the surprise of many, the lady apparently worked as a manager for a well-established company. This led to some judging her, wondering what prompted her to commit the theft. But, others offered her the benefit of doubt, claiming she might have kleptomania (mental illness involving not being able to resist repeated urge to steal things you don’t need). A few were simply sympathetic towards her parents.

Luckily, the case has since been closed, thanks to the footage. The stall owner reportedly made a police report with the undeniable evidence. Additionally, the lady has since been arrested and has also confessed to the crime. Well, that is certainly a poor start to 2023. Hopefully, the lady will take full responsibility for her actions.
