“Who Is Buying This?”: Netizens React To Prices Of Fruits At Sun Fresh In The Exchange TRX

Japanese fruits are regarded as some of the best as they are grown with plenty of care and dedication from the farmers. The attention is also reflected in the price as Japanese fruits are considered one of the most expensive on the market— but would you pay over RM 100 for a box of strawberries?

A Xiao Hong Shu account named ‘I Love Malaysian Food’ (我爱大马美食), shared a look at the fruits’ prices at the Sun Fresh store in Seibu at The Exchange TRX. The speciality store offers an exclusive selection of fresh fruit flown directly from Japan. Right off the bat, the prices of the fruits were over the top, like the set of Japanese rock melon and Shine Muscat grapes costing a whopping RM640. Another gift set costs RM507— but you will get more variety with four types of fruits.

Individual prices of the fruits aren’t better for the wallet either, as a box of grapes is between RM150 and RM300. Strawberries and apples can cost RM180 and RM80, and a box of six mandarin oranges will set you back by RM50. The store also offers cut fruits and fruit sandwiches for on-the-go snacking— but their prices make FamilyMart look like a budget option, as a strawberry sandwich with whipped cream is RM40 while a cup of peeled mandarin oranges is RM30.

Netizens shared their reactions to the prices for these fruits, mostly shocked at how much they cost. Many even wondered if there is a market for these fruits, asking who would pay such a high amount. However, one netizen admitted that the quality is better than the ones sold at regular supermarkets. Interestingly, one comment revealed that fruits are just as expensive in Japan, adding a photo of Shine Muscat grapes that cost 6480 Japanese Yen (approximately RM215).
