Slightly more than a year ago, popular cross-messaging platform WhatsApp Messenger rolled out WhatsApp Web, making it possible for us to reply our messages via desktop. Today, the app is taking it to the next level by introducing an actual desktop app!

Like WhatsApp Web, the new desktop app is an extension of your phone because it sync conversations and messages from your mobile device.

This means that you have a new way to stay in touch anytime and anywhere, whether on your phone or computer at home or work. And because the app runs natively on your desktop, you’ll have support for native desktop notifications, better keyboard shortcuts, and more.

Like WhatsApp Web, the desktop app offers the same function as WhatsApp for mobile, except voice calling. You can’t voice-call your contacts but you can record and send soundbites, as well as files from your computer.

The WhatsApp desktop app will definitely help WhatsApp compete against other similar messaging services such as iMessenger, WeChat, LINE, and Skype. For users, this also means that you no longer have to have an extra tab open on your browser to run your WhatsApp conversations.

The new desktop app is available for Windows 8+ and Mac OS 10.9+ and is synced with WhatsApp on your mobile device.

To download the app, go here from your desktop browser. Then, open the app and scan the QR code using the WhatsApp app on your phone (look for WhatsApp Web menu under Settings). And you’re good to go 🙂
