#WentworthMiller: Opens Up About Suicidal Thoughts & Depression In Facebook Post

Internet memes can be funny, like when Leornado DiCaprio‘s Oscar memes were so popular that the star himself had to acknowledge it.

Alternatively, some memes can be insensitive and hurtful, such was the case with Wentworth Miller’s fat-shaming meme. The 43-year-old actor wrote a brutally honest post about his fight with depression and suicidal thoughts on his Facebook page.

“Today I found myself the subject of an Internet meme. Not for the first time. This one, however, stands out from the rest.”

Fat-shaming, according to Urban Dictionary, is the act of poking fun of someone for being overweight, or telling someone they are worthless, useless, lazy, or disgusting because they are overweight.

The viral meme (since-deleted), shared by LAD Bible, features side-by-side photos of Wentworth. One is his “Prison Break” promotional photo (left), toned and fierce, and another in red T-shirt (right), slightly chubby and happy. The image was captioned, “When you break out of prison and find out about McDonald’s monopoly”.

“In 2010, at the lowest point in my adult life, I was looking everywhere for relief/comfort/distraction. And I turned to food. It could have been anything. Drugs. Alcohol. Sex. But eating became the one thing I could look forward to. Count on to get me through. There were stretches when the highlight of my week was a favourite meal and a new episode of TOP CHEF. Sometimes that was enough. Had to be.

And I put on weight. Big f–king deal.”

He admitted that “it hurt to breathe” when he first saw the meme, but “strength”, “healing”, and “forgiveness” got him through it.

“Like a dandelion up through the pavement, I persist.”

Wentworth, who struggled with depression since the age of 5, emphasised that seeking help and reaching out can combat depression. But we are really glad to know that he is doing well and hope to see him as Michael Scofield in the “Prison Break” reboot when it’s released on FOX.
