Only those who have worked in retail or the food and beverage (F&B) industry truly understand the stress and exhaustion that come with the job. In addition to long and hectic hours, employees often have to deal with ill-mannered customers on a daily basis, and that alone can drive anyone up the wall.
Despite the disrespect, most of these workers remain professional and patient while carrying out their duties until a situation forces them to take a firmer stance. Over the weekend, a video circulated online showing a rude foreign customer throwing a drink at a barista after a heated argument, and this time, the customer was most definitely not in the right. Here’s what happened:

A video that recently went viral showed a female ZUS Coffee barista, or “Zurista”, in a heated confrontation with a foreign customer. The footage, recorded by the customer, reportedly stemmed from their dissatisfaction with the slow service. The situation escalated when the customer threw their cup of coffee at the barista after she told them to leave the premises.
The individual then hurled another object at her, prompting the barista to throw something back in the customer’s direction, more out of frustration than retaliation. Since the video was posted, netizens have rallied in support of the Zurista, urging ZUS Coffee to stand by their employee rather than terminate them over the incident. Even content creator Ceddy Ang expressed his frustration towards the foreign customer and called on ZUS Coffee to protect the Zurista, noting that not every customer is reasonable.

On Monday (10th November), ZUS Coffee issued an official statement to address the viral incident. “We have taken the necessary steps to conduct a thorough investigation, and we are standing with our Zurista through this time,” the company wrote before adding that the employee is currently recovering from the incident. The brand firmly reminds the public that they do not tolerate any form of abuse or disrespect towards its community.
Netizens rejoiced and praised ZUS Coffee for protecting their staff member and advised that they file a police report against the customer. We’re glad to know that the barista is not losing her job over the incident, and we wish her a speedy recovery.
