When it comes to video games-turned-movies, only a few of them managed to become box office success while the rest just fell flat. In other words, similar to novels-turned-movies, the film adaptations of popular video games is filled with potential failures.
We can’t be certain if we’re going to enjoy watching the upcoming “Warcraft” movie, but we must admit that its newly-released official movie poster looks incredibly stunning.
Original creator Blizzard Entertainment first announced that they’ve teamed up with Legendary Pictures to develop a live-action movie set in the Warcraft universe back in 2006. Director Sam Raimi was originally attached to helm the project, but it was stuck in development for more than 8 years. Raimi later told Crave Online that he won’t be directing since he was committed to direct the movie “Oz the Great and Powerful”.
Fortunately, it was later announced that the film, which is newly-named “Warcraft: The Beginning”, will be helmed by director Duncan Jones (of “Source Code” fame).
Written by Charles Leavitt, the plot is said to be based on the novel “Warcraft: The Last Guardian“. Production on the film began earlier in January this year after Blizzard Entertainment announced its full casting and concept art of the locations during BlizzCon 2013.
Jones aand his effects team are currently putting the finishing touches to the movie, which promises to demonstrate the bitter war between man and orc when a portal opens between their 2 worlds.
The orcs in the film are being brought to life via performance capture across a 87-day shoot and a long post-production process.
“Viking” actor Travis Fimmel will play Anduin Lothar, a character that is described to be a war hero who sacrificed everything to keep the people of Azeroth safe. “Dracula Untold” actor Dominic Cooper is set to portray King Llane Wrynn, the leader of the Alliance city of Stormwind. Cooper previously appeared in “Captain America: The First Avengers” as Tony Stark’s father, Howard Stark.
Other characters that will be included in The Alliance includes Ben Foster’s Medivh, Ben Schnetzer’s Khadgar, Ruth Negga’s Lady Taria, and Paula Patton’s Garona.
As for The Horde, “Dawn of the Planet of the Apes” actor Toby Kebbel will play Durotan, the noble Chieftain of the Frostwolf Clan, battling to save his people and his family from extinction.
Durotan’s right hand, Orgrim, will be played by “Pacific Rim” actor Rob Kazinsky and the character is described to be a brave warrior destined to wield the Doomhammer, a weapon of orc legend. Clancy Brown is set to appear as the orc kind’s most fearsome and titanic warchief, Blackhand aka “The Destroyer”.
Hong Kong actor Daniel Wu is the only Asian cast in the film and he is set to portray Gul’dan, the supreme orc ruler who is fueled by a dark magic that even he cannot control.
And once again, all thanks to Empire Magazine, we finally have a new look at Jones’ upcoming “Warcraft” movie through 3 new movie stills.
The characters shown in the pictures are Fimmel’s Anduin Lothar Fimmel), Kebbell’s Durotan, and Kazinsky’s Orgrim Doomhammer.

The film, which is a Legendary Pictures, Blizzard Entertainment and Atlas Entertainment production, is produced by Charles Roven, Thomas Tull, Jon Jashni and Alex Gartner. Stuart Fenegan, Jillian Share, Brent O’Connor, and Blizzard Entertainment’s Michael Morhaime and Paul Sams are serving as executive producers.
In conjunction with Blizzard’s annual BlizzCon!, the first official “Warcraft” trailer is expected to arrive this Friday.
“Warcraft: The Beginning” is due to be released on 3rd June 2016.
