If there’s anything to be excited about the film adaptation of the “Warcraft” video game franchise, it’s its stellar casting!
But first, a little education on the “Warcraft” movie! ;)
It took more than 8 years to develop the film as original creator Blizzard Entertainment announced that they’ve teamed up with Legendary Pictures to develop a live-action film set in the Warcraft universe back in 2006. Director Sam Raimi was originally attached to helm the project but later told Crave Online that he won’t be directing since he was committed to direct the movie “Oz the Great and Powerful”.
Fortunately though, it was later announced that director Duncan Jones (of “Source Code” fame) will be directing the film adapation with a script by Charles Leavitt. The plot of the film is said to be based on the novel “Warcraft: The Last Guardian“. The production of the film started earlier in January this year after revealing its full casting and concept art of the locations during BlizzCon 2013. At that time, no details were provided about the characters.
However, this year’s BlizzCon came with a surprise as the director finally revealed the movie artwork and the official characters that the cast will be playing. According to our source, “Viking” actor Travis Fimmel is set to appear in the film as Anduin Lothar, a character that is described to be a war hero who sacrificed everything to keep the people of Azeroth safe.
“Dracula Untold” actor Dominic Cooper has joined cast to play King Llane Wrynn, the leader of the Alliance city of Stormwind. Cooper previously appeared in “Captain America: The First Avengers” as Tony Stark’s father, Howard Stark.
Other characters that will be included in The Alliance includes Ben Foster’s Medivh, Ben Schnetzer’s Khadgar, Ruth Negga’s Lady Taria, and Paula Patton’s Garona.
Full description of the characters are as follows:
- Medivh: Known as “the Guardian”, Medivh is a mysterious and reclusive protector who wields formidable power.
- Khadgar: Khadgar is a gifted young mage, embarking on a daring search for the truth.
- Lady Taria: Taria is the royal Queen of Stormwind, King Llane’s great love and most trusted counsel.
- Garona: Caught between the Alliance and the Horde, Garona is a strong-willed survivor who must decide where her true loyalty lies. a survivor caught between the Alliance and the Horde.
As for The Horde, “Dawn of the Planet of the Apes” actor Toby Kebbel will play Durotan, the noble Chieftain of the Frostwolf Clan, battling to save his people and his family from extinction.
Durotan’s right hand, Orgrim, will be played by “Pacific Rim” actor Rob Kazinsky and the character is described to be a brave warrior destined to wield the Doomhammer: a weapon of orc legend. Clancy Brown is set to appear as the orc kind’s most fearsome and titanic warchief, Blackhand aka ‘The Destroyer”.
Hong Kong actor Daniel Wu is the only Asian cast in the film and he is set to portray Gul’dan, the supreme orc ruler who is fueled by a dark magic that even he cannot control.
Alongside the announcement, Legendary Pictures also launched 2 official websites for the highly-anticipated Warcraft adaptation for fans to register at either FightForTheHorde or FightForTheAlliance to show their allegiance to whichever side they choose.
The question is, which side will you choose?
Warcraft is scheduled for release in 3D on 11th March 2016.
