Face shaming – much like body shaming – is just as hurtful to the receiver. However, despite increasing awareness on body positivity and acceptance, it is disheartening to see that there are still individuals who choose to be negative.

Malaysian singer Nadeera Zaini encountered a series of online shaming while competing in the local singing competition “Big Stage 2023”. Speaking with local media, Nadeera, who’s also the eventual winner of the show, opened up about the hate comments she received while she took part in the competition.

“After I was severely criticised following my performance during the third week of the show, I stop reading online comments. I was at home scrolling though my old photos when I received a notification on my phone. Someone commented that one of my face features (nose) looks like a pig,” the Johor-born songstress said.

Nadeera was obviously insulted by the malicious comment. “I immediately cried. I really don’t like it when someone makes fun of my looks, because these are all God’s creations,” the former “All Together Now Malaysia” contestant added. “Let me ask the person. ‘How would you feel if this happens to your own family member, or even yourself?'”

The hate comment not only affected Nadeera, but also her family members as well. According to her, “My mom, dad, and even my aunt broke down in tears when I told them about this during our video call session. They didn’t understand why people could be so cruel. I told them to just be patient. This is just the beginning of the ups and downs, as I continue my journey as an artist. Please don’t criticise me anymore.”

The matter was also brought up during the finale of “Big Stage 2023”. She revealed that a lot of people had condemned her, saying that she’s not pretty enough. Seemingly impacted by the negative remarks, Nadeera also shared that at one point, she lost her motivation to carry on in the competition.

After she was done with her performance, the “Dia Penggantimu” singer was unable to hold back her tears after one of the resident judges, Ajai, gave her some words of encouragement. The famous composer said, “I’d like to smack the person who told you you’re not beautiful. Never belittle ourselves. Everything that’s given by God, has its own strengths.”

We’re really sorry you have to go through this, Nadeera! Always remember that you are deserving of love, respect, and acceptance just as you are. Don’t let the negative opinions of others dim your light.
