It’s unfortunate that people tend to take advantage of foreigners by scamming them into buying something that is overpriced. There have been a few cases of tourists being scammed when visiting Malaysia. Remember the phone shop in Kuala Lumpur that almost got away with scamming two men from China into buying a RM1.6k SIM card?

It’s always best to have a local friend or guide to show you around as they can also help you avoid being scammed. Unfortunately for this tourist, he was travelling alone and ended up paying RM10 for a regular Ramly Burger on the streets. Here’s what happened:

SOURCE: FACEBOOK

American content creator Solomon (a.k.a Traveling Solo Logs) posted a video of him ordering the famous Ramly Burger from a food vendor in Bukit Bintang. While waiting for this order, the traveller recorded the sellers preparing the burger and at one point he even had a conversation with a Japanese woman who was also there to try the street food for the first time.

When it was time to pay, he asked the staff members about the price to which they replied RM10 (USD$ 3) for a regular Ramly burger with no cheese and egg. Apart from wanting to try the famous burger, Solo also wanted to compare it with a regular McDonald’s McChicken burger and see which one tasted better. The winner? The regular Ramly burger which he gave a 9/10 rating.

After the video went viral, Malaysian netizens were shocked that the American tourist had to pay RM10 for a regular Ramly burger which usually costs around RM4 to RM5. Many called out the sellers for scamming the poor man while others criticised them for their unfriendly attitude as shown in the video. Some even tagged the Ministry of Domestic Trade and Consumer Affairs (KPDNHEP) to investigate and intervene in this matter.

There were also those who suspected that the overpriced burger was probably due to renting out the space in Bukit Bintang, which is known to be an “atas” shopping district in KL. Do you think the vendors actually scammed the content creator or was this a case of overpriced food due to the stall’s location?
