After the sudden death of Taiwanese actress Barbie Hsu (徐熙媛), Chinese businesswoman Zhang Lan (张兰) has constantly been in the news. The ex-mother-in-law of Big S (大S) continues to spark outrage with her actions, even leading to her suspension on Douyin.

Recently, Zhang Lan shared a video on her official TikTok account, which she opened after getting banned from the Chinese version. In the video, the mother of Wang Xiao Fei (汪小菲) read a letter, which she claimed to be from a fan. The letter expressed support for the public figure amidst the current scandal. Shockingly, after Zhang Lan finished reading the letter, the video cuts to a clip of her bowing with her hands clasped together.

It seems the bow was to show gratitude to her fans, but some news outlets speculate it was to show humility. Towards the end of the video, Zhang Lan laments about her recent struggles, saying she could only move on because of the support she received from her fans. She also thanked her supporters, calling them a source of motivation. Unsurprisingly, the video received mixed reactions, with some calling the businesswoman out on her bluff.

Given her reputation, it’s no surprise that the video raised criticism from netizens. Many argued that the video was to seek attention from the public amidst the news about Barbie’s death. Meanwhile, others quipped that the letter Zhang Lan read might also be fake, calling the whole video an act. However, some comments supported the businesswoman, urging her to ignore the negative comments.

Zhang Lan had received a lot of backlash for her recent actions involving Barbie’s death. Her ban from Douyin was reportedly due to her repeatedly spreading rumours about the late actress and using the death to drive traffic to her account. Following the ban, her son Wang Xiao Fei announced that he would cut ties with her. However, the action sparked more criticism because netizens say it’s another act to gain clout.

Meanwhile, fans continue to take action against negative comments regarding Barbie’s death. They also expressed support for the actress’ mother, Huang Chun Mei (黃春梅), who said she’s prepared to “go to war” against her former-in-laws for causing hurt towards Barbie, even after her death. What are your thoughts on this?
