Teaching tourists how to speak our native tongue can be just as enjoyable as learning a foreign language ourselves. Malaysians always get excited when they hear their favourite artists utter a few words or phrases in Malay. This British model caught the attention of locals after showing off his Malay-speaking skills in his latest TikTok post.
Kit Price recently posted a video on his channel where he invited his fellow model friend, Calum Harper, who was visiting Malaysia, to dine at a local restaurant. “Calum has never tried traditional Malaysian food, so today, we’re going to be doing that,” he said in the video while driving to their destination.
The two sat down before the 23-year-old ordered their breakfast while speaking in Malay. “Bang, dua roti canai dan nasi lemak,” said the fashion model in the video. Unfortunately, the eatery did not have nasi lemak, but the models went ahead with the roti canai order. Kit introduced Calum to some of the popular drinks in Malaysia, particularly Milo Ice.
Calum was taken aback by how flavourful and sweet the drink was. “That is like crack. That is actual crack!” he described the drink. He proclaimed that it was the best chocolate drink he had ever had. Sadly, Calum is not a fan of curry, but he clarified that the roti itself was nice, reminding him of pancake. Kit then revealed that they spent £0.20 (RM1.10) on their meals each.
Although he only spoke a few sentences, Malaysians were still fascinated by Kit Price’s fluency in Malay. Some were curious on how he learned the language. It was reported that Kit Price actually grew up in Malaysia before furthering his studies in the UK and eventually pursuing a career in modelling.
According to an interview with Culted a few years ago, the TikToker said he was “quite sporty and loved performing arts throughout his school years” in Malaysia. Given Kit’s experience in our country, the handsome model was probably playing tourist to his good friend. Hopefully Kit will post a follow-up video of Calum trying nasi lemak next.
