Back in the day, most parents will only give their children daily pocket money ranging from RM2 – RM5 to get through the day. Some will take the opportunity to save up by packing up their own food from home for recess or only spend on necessities.

You’d be considered rich if you’re given RM10 a day. Now imagine having a RM200 allowance for 1 week. You can save RM100 a week for a whole year and maybe even save enough to buy yourself a PlayStation 2 (this is for the millennials out there)! But this guy on TikTok thinks that RM200 was not enough for him and that got the internet fired up.

We used to be able to afford a full meal for RM5 when we were still studying in high school a few years ago. Now imagine what you could do with RM200 per week… TikTok user @azrulikram_ or Azrul posted a video showing what looks like a window view from inside of an aircraft. The text in the video reads, “During secondary school, my parents only gave me RM200 a week. Trust me when I say that my situation was that bad. I am depressed. I need to heal myself.”

It’s funny how easy youngsters tend to claim to be “depressed” these days. We can’t help but wonder – what did this guy spend his money on? After a few days, the video went viral with now reaching over 600k views, 26.7k likes and 6k comments. The TikTok post triggered a lot of netizens, especially those who actually went through financial struggles. Many shared their experiences of living without an allowance and telling the TikTok user that he should be grateful that he didn’t have to go through what they went through.

Before any of you decide to join the others in the comments, let’s get some things straight. Apparently, the video was not meant to be taken seriously as it was sarcasm. Azrul posted the video just for the sake of creating content and participated in a trend where people (sarcastically) share their bad experiences. He explained this in a pinned comment as well as posting a second video.

Even though he clarified the situation, there are still those who just overlooked the pinned comment and left some angry comments. Perhaps we should take a step back and dig a little deeper before being angry at someone.
