Former K-pop idol Ahn Somyi (안솜이) recently opened up the heartbreaking story regarding her transition from the glamorous idol life to the controversial world of adult entertainment.
The ex-DIA member made an appearance in an episode of the TV show “Attack On Sisters”. During the chat, she revealed that she has often been subjected to scrutiny from the public after her current job as a broadcasting jockey for an adult streaming site came to light last year.
“I’ve been working as a BJ (broadcasting jockey) for a year now. I’ve received a lot of criticisms as I used to be an idol. After my group disbanded, I finished my exclusive contract, and chose BJ as my new job, but I’m suffering from criticism and malicious comments because it’s a platform with many adult-oriented content,” Somyi told the MCs.
She also touched on the controversy surrounding her vaping post on Instagram. According to the “Can’t Stop” singer, “I recently posted a photo of myself smoking an e-cigarette on my personal socials. I didn’t intend to encourage the public to smoke, but someone commented, ‘I’m getting tired of this,’ to which I replied, ‘Why do you care whether I smoke or not?’ I was condemned after articles about this issue were published.”
When asked on whether she had ever considered other jobs aside from being an adult streamer, Ahn Somyi responded, “After leaving the agency, I worked part-time as a shopping mall model, and also as an employee at a cafe. But the income only covered my living expenses. I worked really hard while I was active as an idol, but I couldn’t cross the break-even point.”
“I received 700,000 (~RM2370) won in monthly allowance from my parents, although my family was struggling at that time. My father currently runs a ‘jjamppong’ store in Jeju Island during the day and as a chef at a small hotel in the evening. My mother took a break after giving birth. She’s reached her limit as a contract worker, so she’s searching for factory jobs,” the former girl group member added.
Somyi also talked about her mental health struggles. “I’ve been receiving psychiatric counseling for a long time. I have severe bipolar disorder, anxiety disorder and panic disorder,” said the 23-year-old internet personality. “There were times when I couldn’t sleep for two days. I’ll sleep for 12~16 hours if I take sleeping pills. The doctor says it’s better to take medicine, but this interferes with my broadcast. I fall asleep when I drink, so I drink alone every day.”
The three MCs of the talk show started shedding tears after hearing Somyi’s emotional story. One of the hosts, Park Misun, then advised her to take a break from her streaming job. That said, the YouTuber responded, “I have no income if I take a break from broadcasting. It’s a bond I can’t get out of. I feel like if I collapse, then it’s over for my family.”
