This may come as a surprise to some, but the wife of former Prime Minister Tun Dr Mahathir, Tun Dr Siti Hasmah, is a skilled violinist. She demonstrated her talent on her 99th birthday last month, leaving many speechless and impressed by her mobility and memory at her age. That day was simply an intimate session at home, but she truly put her skills to the test when she joined the orchestra for Biduanita Negara Datuk Seri Siti Nurhaliza’s recent performance.
Earlier this week, the icon was invited to perform at Sound of Malaysia, a Traditional Orchestra of Malaysia (OTM) outreach programme held in conjunction with this year’s Merdeka celebrations. What no one expected, however, was that Tun Siti Hasmah would join the singer on stage. Watch:
Siti Nurhaliza later shared a video on Instagram of her rehearsals with Tun Hasmah at the special event, which took place at Multimedia University (MMU) and the historic Istana Budaya. “Tun Dr Hasmah and I rehearsed for the performance together. She was so motherly, and I was deeply touched by the experience,” the songstress wrote in her captions.
As seen in the video below, the icon embraced the former medical doctor upon her arrival, before the scene cut to their rehearsals. Overcome with emotion, the singer was spotted wiping away tears with a tissue before kneeling next to and resting her head against Tun Hasmah, as a gesture of gratitude, respect and affection. Later that evening, following the performance, the stateswoman addressed the audience, explaining that it was Siti Nurhaliza who had invited her to perform, and expressing how grateful she was to be part of the occasion.
Shortly after the video was posted, many were moved by the emotional moments shared by the two public figures, both offstage and onstage. Some remarked on the humility of the two icons, while others highlighted the deep respect and affection the public holds for Tun Hasmah.
