General Elections are just around the corner and you’re going to hear a lot of political opinions posted online by your friends, family members, and even celebs. Some would rather stay quiet on the matter and express their opinions after casting their votes while others are more than willing to speak what’s on their minds.

Politics can be a sensitive topic and celebrities are easy targets for criticism if their political views turned out to be different from their fans. Famous people are usually careful in what they say to avoid offending any parties or voters but seems like Jamal Abdillah may have struck a nerve among netizens after posting a video.

Fitnah. Harap kau kena saman oleh @dapmalaysia nanti. Propaganda2 khalimah Allah, azan takleh dilaungkan, pondok2 tahfiz nak diroboh tu semua fitnah. Di Penang, negeri paling banyak peruntukan untuk Majlis agama Islam tau tak? Tahfiz2 dijaga, ada elaun lagi. pic.twitter.com/9PPx3zhuZV

Veteran singer Dato Jamal Abdillah recently posted a (now deleted) video where he encouraged his fans and followers to vote during the upcoming general election. However, in the video, the singer had apparently ‘advised’ people to not vote for a certain political party due to their past issues.

The video angered supporters of said party and accused the “Azura” artist of slander. Twitter user @YOEPCD reposted the video and warned the 63-year-old that he can be sued by the party he mentioned in the video. Other netizens also criticised the father-of-four for not providing evidence for his claims.

After much backlash from netizens, Jamal Abdillah posted a follow-up video to address the previous video. In the new post, the Malaysian legend publicly apologised to the whole of Malaysia as well as to the previously mentioned political party for his ignorance. “I wish to humbly apologise for the way I ‘spun’ the issues I’ve mentioned out of ignorance. As a Malaysian citizen, I have no knowledge of what actually happened,” he said.

The singer then clarified that one of the viral issues he listed in the deleted video was actually a rumour he heard from friends but never verified. He also mentioned that he made the video cause he was worried for the future generation.

Jamal ended the video by saying, “As someone who has no knowledge of politics, I shouldn’t have made the video. Nevertheless, I hope that there will be no more issues after this and that I won’t spread any misinformation or slander.”
