When a movie reaches iconic status, it’s only natural for fans to clamour for sequels, and that’s certainly been the case with the beloved 2001 film “Princess Diaries,” starring Anne Hathaway as Mia Thermopolis. After the 2004 sequel captured the hearts of many, fans have been eagerly waiting for news of a third installment. While Anne is also set to return in the “Devil Wears Prada” sequel, it’s her reprisal as Mia that fans have been most excitedly waiting for.
Well, the wait is finally over! The Queen of Genovia is set to make her royal return in “Princess Diaries 3,” nearly 20 years later. The film will be directed by none other than Malaysian filmmaker Adele Lim, best known for co-writing “Crazy Rich Asians.”

Adele Lim, a diehard fan of the original series, expressed her excitement about bringing the beloved franchise back to life for its third instalment. “We look forward to celebrating its core themes of female empowerment, joy, and mentorship with audiences worldwide,” said the Malaysian director in a statement.
The upcoming movie will continue the storyline from the first two films rather than rebooting the franchise. The script is penned by Flora Greeson, with Naia Cucukov (Adele’s producing partner at 100 Tigers) serving as executive producer alongside Melissa Stack. Debra Martin Chase will also be returning as a producer from the first two movies.
The exciting news was shared by the beloved lead actress on her Instagram account. In the post, Anne is seen counting from one to three before delivering one of the iconic lines from the movie, sending fans into a frenzy. The video quickly garnered excitement, with many expressing their disbelief that the third movie is finally happening. Fans also look forward to seeing if other original cast members will also return for the highly anticipated sequel.
