Recently, a story of a Penang man demanding RM180 back from the local bar singer went viral. After receiving criticism for his actions, the man appeared at a press conference to publicly apologise and explain his actions. 23-year-old Liang Wei Jie (transliteration) appeared in front of the local press to share his side of the story.

He revealed that the singer was a childhood friend and that the RM180 he gave was to show support for her. However, Liang admitted it was wrong to ask her to return the money, saying it was an impulsive move. He also shared that he will no longer pursue the money and has taken down his WeChat Moments post.

Liang also said that he has since apologised to the singer and her mother, Hazel, and issued a public apology through his Facebook account. While he said the mother and daughter have yet to respond to his apology, he hopes the issue would be put to rest. According to the 23-year-old, “This matter has caused a big fuss and has seriously affected my life. I’ve faced a lot of pressure and even harassment from the public.”

In addition to Liang’s public apology, there are also clarifications regarding the image used by Hazel in her post about the incident. According to a local news outlet, the image that depicts a young man with bleached hair was not Liang and was someone unrelated to the incident. The man in the photo clarified in a Facebook post that he has no affiliation with the incident after receiving criticism from netizens who found his Facebook profile.
