The Chinese entertainment industry was in shock following the news that singer Khalil Fong (方大同) had passed away at age 41 after battling an unspecified disease. After his death, many netizens dug up past videos which showed how much the star struggled with his illness.
The singer-songwriter’s agency, Fu Music, announced his death on 1st March 2025 (Saturday), revealing that he passed on 21st February 2025 (Friday). The agency didn’t disclose the exact cause of his death. However, Khalil previously spoke about the illness that he has been suffering from for around five years. The disease was also the cause of the singer’s years-long hiatus from the music industry.
After the singer’s death, many netizens began looking through past videos and clips to mourn his passing. One video in particular sparked interest as it showed Khalil having difficulties singing whilst recording a song for his 2024 album, “The Dreamer”. In the video, the vocalist seemed to have trouble making sounds, and his voice was noticeably hoarse while trying to record his lines.
Despite multiple attempts, Khalil couldn’t sing the lyrics. He also couldn’t stop yawning, showing exhaustion and lack of energy. Finally, the singer gave up on recording the track, helplessly saying, “I don’t think I can sing today. I lack oxygen. I won’t sing today.”. The video quickly gained traction amongst fans, who expressed sadness upon seeing the star’s struggle with his illness.
Khalil’s passing also sparked public concern about pneumothorax, a disease where air leaks into the space between the lung and chest wall. It’s unknown if this disease had caused the star’s untimely death. However, it’s believed pneumothorax was one of the factors since Khalil was previously diagnosed with it. Others also discussed whether Khalil’s workaholic tendencies contributed to his health problems.
Regardless, Khalil’s death has saddened fans and colleagues in the entertainment industry. Stars like JJ Lin (林俊傑), Wang Leehom (王力宏) and Fiona Sit (薛凱琪) have paid tributes to the late singer through social media. We also want to extend our condolences to Khalil’s loved ones.
