On Sunday (9th March 2025), shoppers in KSL City Mall in Johor Bahru were met with a terrifying incident where the ceiling and floor became one. At around 7pm, debris and metal struts caved in onto the corridor, stalls, and in front of the shop lots on the first floor of the shopping complex.
In an interview, one of the mall’s workers, who wished to be identified as Mr Ngui, described the situation, “It started with small noises, then a noticeable crack appeared. The crack grew longer and debris began to fall before the entire ceiling collapsed.” While mall security has fenced off the area, netizens have voiced their concerns on social media.

Netizens express mounting frustration over what they perceive as a lapse in routine maintenance towards the mall. Many questioned whether current efforts are sufficient to ensure the safety of shoppers. Further discourse ventured to the perceived broader neglect of public venues and their upkeep. Some commenters highlighted similarities to previous incidents in other shopping malls.
This discussion has ignited a broader debate about accountability, the need for enhanced safety measures, and speculation about the causes of such dysfunction. With so many malls in Malaysia, it’s hard not to have something go wrong here and there. Fortunately, the police have begun their investigation into the collapse, and reports indicate that there are no casualties despite the chaos.
