The Malaysian passport is a necessary document that allows locals to travel internationally and contains numerous crucial biometric information. Despite its ordinary appearance, this document has a lot of hidden designs that many Malaysians might not be aware of.

A Twitter user recently shared a video showcasing the hidden features of the Malaysian passport. In the video, an individual used an ultraviolet (UV) light lamp to show how each visa page in the passport contains an image of a Malaysian building or landmark, like the PETRONAS Twin Towers and the National Mosque of Malaysia. The passport shown in the video is the latest redesign of the document, launched in 2017.

The Twitter user also captioned the post with, “No wonder it’s expensive to make a new passport”, referring to the many features inside the document. For those unaware, applying for a Malaysian passport costs up to RM200, and the document is valid for five years. However, selected applicants, like senior citizens and children below 12, are offered discounts. Individuals with disabilities can also apply for a passport for free.

Many Malaysians have since reacted to the post, expressing awe at how many hidden images were inside our country’s passport. Some noted that the features are also for security purposes and to determine the passport’s authenticity. Others praised the Malaysian passport for its security and strength, as it currently ranks 12th on the Henley Passport Index and allows visa-free travel to 182 countries.

On the other hand, some netizens lament the lack of diversity in the images, as the landmarks were mostly mosques and the Twin Towers. Some also show disappointment that Malaysian passports are only valid for five years, adding that neighbouring countries like Indonesia and Singapore offer ten-year validity. However, the government will soon extend the validity period of Malaysian passports, but there is no specific launch date.

Regardless, Malaysians should be proud of our passport, especially given its high ranking on the Henley Passport Index. What are your thoughts on the passport’s hidden features?
