The issue of overcrowding at LRT and MRT stations has been ongoing and remains unresolved. For years, many have been calling for solutions to crowd control and frequency issues, but, unfortunately, the situation has not improved. Earlier this week, photos and videos circulated all over social media showing the large crowd at Pasar Seni MRT station.

As shown in the screenshots below, passengers were seen pushing each other and unable to move when others descended from the escalator. According to the captions, the incident occurred at around 6:45pm, and there was even a long queue of people on the upper floor waiting for their turn to use the escalator.

Netizens took to the comments sections of these social media posts to express concerns over the safety of passengers. Many wondered what might have caused the overcrowding, with some claiming that one of the train doors had malfunctioned, forcing everyone to enter through the other functioning doors. Others suggested that the issue could be related to train frequency.

Another possible explanation for this incident could be the new snow attraction at Pavilion KL in Bukit Bintang. It was recently reported that a sea of people were seen struggling to move through the packed space, as many had travelled from afar to see the shopping district covered in artificial snow. The congestion reminded many of the Itaewon Halloween tragedy that occurred two years ago.

At the time of writing, there have been no reports of injuries at Pasar Seni MRT station, but it is clear that people were annoyed with the inconvenience. Of course, this was not the first time this particular MRT station has experienced an overwhelming crowd, as such occurrences are common, especially during rush hours. However, this viral incident did remind everyone that there has been little to no improvement in crowd control.

Netizens have also urged Transport Minister Anthony Loke, RapidKL and Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim to address the situation and find a solution to this ongoing problem. Let this be a reminder to always prioritise safety and seek an alternative route if you encounter a large crowd, in order to avoid injury or being separated from loved ones.

What would you have done if you were in this situation?
