People may have different opinions about entrepreneur Dato Seri Vida, with some even considering her to be a “crazy rich Malaysian”. However, if there’s one thing many can agree on about the public figure, it’s that she is smarter than she looks. Apart from her knowledge of entrepreneurship, she’s actually also fluent in Mandarin.
Earlier this week, DS Vida posted a video on her TikTok channel of her testing out some limited-edition luxury exercise equipment at a Louis Vuitton outlet in China. The celebrity businesswoman can be seen trying out the dumbbell and jump rope inside the outlet to help her decide whether or not they were worth purchasing.
Towards the end of the video, it was revealed that the exercise set cost around RM15k to 20k but it was not the prices of those items that took netizens by surprise. What many didn’t expect to hear was the “I Am Me” singer conversing with the Louis Vuitton staff in full Mandarin. The video then went viral on Twitter where many said they were amazed to learn this new information about Dato Seri Vida.
Others, including influencer Ceddy Ang, weren’t necessarily surprised by the fact that she could speak Mandarin as she used to be a teacher at a Chinese school before becoming an entrepreneur. In an interview with Berita Harian back in 2015, the Qu Puteh founder shared her experience as a teacher at Poi Lam Primary School (SJK (C) Poi Lam) in Perak for 12 years, saying she acquired the Mandarin language through daily conversation.
“12 years is long enough for me to learn and understand the language. Furthermore, me being a teacher at that school helped me, to some extent, to communicate with students who share the same language,” she said.
