There’s never a dull moment in Johor, which is now home to one of Malaysia’s happiest cities of 2025, and the latest phenomenon has netizens buzzing. No, the sky isn’t falling, but it is turning a dramatic shade of purple, charged with up to 300,000 amperes and a billion volts.
While electrified skies are nothing unusual for Malaysia’s monsoon-prone regions, what began as an ordinary stormy evening quickly turned into a spectacular display of electrons and photons. The stunning scene left road users—and netizens—completely awestruck just a few days ago.

The video shows the dashboard and windshield of the camera vehicle sitting in regular Malaysian traffic. The flicker of the sky above immediately draws the eye. The flashing tendrils of lightning are a vibrant purple, staining the clouds and bleeding into the atmosphere. The driver and passenger are bewildered, exclaiming, “Woah, you see the sky!”
At the time of writing, the video has already accumulated 900k views and 43k likes. As the footage spread, the comments section erupted with a mix of awe, humor, and cosmic speculations. One commenter humorously noted, “Malaysia, congrats… purple purple sky means someone of significance has descended… this person shall bring prosperity to the country,” while another warned that the unusual glow might signal an impending storm or hurricane. Across the digital landscape, theories abounded—ranging from omens of major events on the horizon to playful nods toward an alien intervention.

Though purple lightning is not exactly common, the vibrant phenomenon remains within the realms of natural explanation. Specific atmospheric conditions, such as high humidity, dense cloud formations, and the presence of particular particles in the air, can interact in unique ways to alter the color of a lightning flash. In this instance, Johor Bahru became the unlikely stage for nature to deliver a once-in-a-purple-moon light show.
Witnessing a rare phenomenon is like catching lightning in a bottle. Our planet just so happens to have an active weather system that not only supports life, but also occasionally plays a few tricks with our senses. One of its last tricks in Johor Bahru was a floating pillar of light in the sky, which was just as beautiful, ominous and luminous.
