Every Mid-Autumn season, our thoughts turn to the intricately crafted, golden-brown, mouth-watering mooncakes. In Chinese culture, mooncakes symbolise completeness and family unity, making this festival a time for celebration. Unfortunately, enjoyment wasn’t the case for one particular family, though it certainly became a memorable incident.

An incident involving mooncakes that was captured on a home security camera has gone viral on social media recently. The footage shows a family of three having a quiet time together in their apartment unit when a plastic-sealed mooncake on the table unexpectedly explodes in front of them.

As shown in the video below, the mother and child were occupied with their screens as the father was seen snacking in the dining area nearby. To the family’s surprise, one of the packets of mooncakes on the coffee table suddenly exploded with a loud bang.

The alarming incident left both the parents speechless as their kid erupts in tears. The mother was then seen comforting her child while the father inspected the exploded mooncake on the table. It is unknown what caused the explosion to happen, but netizens were quick to give their thoughts in the comments.

The majority of netizens speculated that this incident occurred because products made in China are often viewed with suspicion, as they are notorious for having food items that may contain fake ingredients or unknown substances. Many commented that business practices in the country are nothing but a scam.

One netizen, however, argued that it could’ve probably been the use of an artificial sweetener in the mooncake, called “Aspartame” where it’s able to become poison if used in large amounts. Another individual suggested that it could’ve been an additive, “Sodium Acetate” added to the mooncake, which is considered poisonous if consumed.
