Nasi lemak is one of the most beloved dishes in Malaysia. The best part about it is that you can eat it anytime; breakfast, lunch, and dinner. Another reason why we love nasi lemak so much is how easily accessible they are when you’re out and about.

With that being said, how much would you actually be willing to pay for a pack of nasi lemak? What is the limit? Roadside nasi lemak is usually affordable but how would you react if you’re being charged RM40 for two packets?

Content creator Han Aziz or @han_aziz_ posted a video on his TikTok to share the nasi lemak he bought at the roadside stalls at Sri Petaling. The first packet of the traditional dish apparently cost the TikToker RM18. “There’s 1 fried egg, sambal, squid, 1 fried chicken, and extra rice. That’s all,” he pointed out after opening the first packet.

He proceeded to open the second packet of nasi lemak which was surprisingly, slightly more expensive than the first. “This one was RM22. The only difference from the first one is that this one has rendang and no fried egg. Extra rice as well,” said the content creator while comparing the two packets. Combining the prices, the nasi lemak dishes cost him RM40!

Before ending the video, the former Tealive supervisor asked his audience to ponder the pricing of nasi lemak nowadays. The video reached over 800k views on his channel and was reposted on Twitter by @jllmisai with now over 735k views. Netizens reacted to the video but it seems they can’t come to an agreement.

Many were flabbergasted by the price saying that the nasi lemak dishes were too expensive while others suggested that it could be due to the ingredients or raw materials to make the dish. Some say that Han was being unreasonable for complaining about the price of the pricy dishes.

As a response to the criticism, the father-of-one posted a follow-up video to compare the nasi lemak he bought from his favourite stall in Taman Desa with the previous two in the last video, except this one only cost him RM10. “Same portion as the last two. I believe this is more reasonably priced. But maybe everyone has their own perception of what is expensive or not”, he said.

What do you think? Is RM40 for 2 packs of nasi lemak ridiculous?
