The tallest buildings aren’t the only iconic symbols of a country. With the talk of skyscrapers lately, we forgot that the tallest statues also exist around the world. If anything, these statues often represent the culture or beliefs of a city or the entire country itself.

You might be familiar with some of these monuments like the Statue of Liberty in New York or the Sphinx in Egypt or the Statue of Unity in India which currently holds the record for the tallest statue in the world. But did you know that one of the tallest statues in the world is actually located here in Malaysia?

SOURCE: TWITTER

Twitter user @Elill_E tweeted two photos earlier this week where he recently learned that the Big Buddha Statue of Wat Phothikyan Phut Thak Tham located in Bachok, Kelantan, Malaysia is much taller (39 metres) than the iconic Christ the Redeemer statue in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil (30 metres). The photos he tweeted are of the Big Buddha statue as well as a screenshot of a YouTube video of the tallest statues in the world.

The tweet is currently going viral with now over 368.8K views, 1.6k retweets, and nearly 140 quote tweets. The post caught the attention of Malaysian netizens with many claiming that they also just knew about this information upon reading the tweet. Those from Kelantan shared that they’d always see the statue from afar whenever they drive back to their hometown. Others shared holiday photos they had taken in front of the statue.

The original video of the tallest statues in the world was posted on Real Data’s YouTube channel back in December 2021. However, not all statues were included on the list. For your information, Malaysia actually has not one but three tallest statues in the world; the aforementioned, the Batu Caves Murugan statue located in Gombak (42.7 metres), and the Bronze Guan Yin statue located in Penang (30.2 metres).
