Although not seen very often, personalised number plates are not uncommon on the roads, especially on luxury vehicles. However, a number plate consisting of just one number and one letter is extremely rare. In fact, there is only one in the UK, and it is reportedly worth millions.
Earlier this week, the TikTok page @numberplatehistory posted a video showcasing a Mercedes with a highly exclusive number plate. The “1M” number plate, as shown in the clip, is reportedly issued to the Malaysian government, with the Malaysian Ambassador to the UK currently listed as its owner.

According to the host, the “1M” number plate could be worth more than £1 million (RM6 million) if it were to be auctioned today. In the captions, he then went on to explain why this was the case. In the UK, personalised number plates can be a status symbol and a high-value investment. “This number plate, with a dateless format, was specially issued to the Malaysian Embassy. As it is an embassy plate, it is non-transferable outside of their vehicles,” he wrote.
As for how one determines a number plate’s worth, it can be established by a few factors which are:
- Popularity of Initials
- Number of Characters
- Quality of Numbers
“As it is impossible in the United Kingdom to have a two-digit number plate, this is the shortest possible M alongside the privately owned M1,” said the host. Simply put, the “1M” number plate is worth such a significant amount because it is one of a kind, owned by the Malaysian government, and used on the official vehicle of the Malaysian Ambassador to the UK.

As the host mentioned in the video, no collector would be able to purchase the special number plate unless the Malaysian government decides to give it away, which is highly unlikely. As expected, the video attracted the attention of Malaysian netizens, many of whom shared their thoughts upon learning about the number plate’s value.
Some joked that this is where citizens’ tax money has been spent. Others quipped that the “1M” is not worth as much as “1MDB”, referencing the scandal involving a former Prime Minister. A few clarified that the Malaysian government did not spend money on the number as it was specially issued by the UK government as mentioned by the host in the video.

@numberplatehistory £1M Plate You will never be able to buy! This number plate, with a dateless format, was especially issued to the Malaysian Embassy. As it an embassy plate, it is non transferable outside of their vehicles. Over the years, it has been on a variety of vehicles from London Taxis to Mercedes Benz S Classes, currently sitting on an S450. Although it is impossible to say when the registration was issued, documents tell us it was already in use by 1974 through the amazing researcher late Noel Woodall. If this registration ever came to market, not that it can, it would likely sell for over seven figures – or a million pound number plate! It’s value comes inherently from it’s initial, number, and character length. Number Plates / Registration value can be established by a few factors: 🔴 Popularity of Initials 🔴 Number of Characters 🔴 Quality of Numbers As it is impossible in the United Kingdom to have a two digit number plate, this is the shortest possible M alongside the privately owned M1.
