Who doesn’t love a good dessert after a nice meal? Other than sweets and cakes, ice cream is definitely a top favourite and there are a lot of interesting and innovative flavours for ice cream nowadays. If you have a sweet tooth and are adventurous, would you be open to try any flavour?

In case you weren’t aware, there’s a new ice cream flavour and it’s Petai! Yes, you read that right. If you don’t know, petai or bitter beans in English are also known as stink beans because of their skunky/gaseous, methane-like aroma. Who would’ve thought that they could be made into an ice cream flavour?

A local dessert business Zam Ice Cream recently introduced its new Petai-flavoured ice cream. In a video posted on TikTok, the owner shared the process of making the unique dessert. The process is the same as making any ice cream except the petai beans are added to the mix. “I just wanted to make a flavour that’s never been done before,” said the dessert maker.

The video is currently going viral reaching nearly 1 million views, 46.7k likes, and 2.4k comments. While it looks delicious, the unique new flavour will not be added to the menu. According to a local news outlet, Zam Ice Cream said it will not be selling petai-flavoured ice cream but will reconsider if there is a demand for it.

After the TikTok video went viral, many netizens were perplexed by the innovation. Many jokingly encouraged the dessert maker to try other peculiar flavours while others were ‘traumatised’ after watching the video. If you’re wondering how the new flavour tastes, the business owner herself shared her honest opinion in the follow-up video below and said that it tasted awful, giving it a 0/5 star rating.
