The internet has given many people the platform to highlight incompetence in the service industry, prompting swift action from companies. However, this local mother’s attempt at shaming a McDonald’s employee backfired because many believed she was in the wrong.

The woman, identified as Amora on TikTok, recently posted two videos taken from an undisclosed McDonald’s outlet in Malaysia. In the video, Amora complains about an employee, saying the employee forced her and her daughter to leave because she was sitting in the restaurant. The employee, believed to be the manager, explained that Amora could not stay in the restaurant without ordering anything.

The TikTok user provided additional background information about the situation in her video captions. She said she and her child entered the restaurant when it was raining, hoping to seek temporary shelter. Amora also said the McDonald’s outlet was empty when she and her child entered the restaurant. In a comment, she claimed that she was planning to order something once her daughter finished her meal brought from home.

Many netizens have reacted to Amora’s post, showing mixed responses. Some sympathised with the mother, saying the employee should be considerate and allow the mother and daughter to sit at the restaurant, given the situation. However, most comments criticised Amora for trying to shame the employee for doing her job. Many defended the staff, saying she’s likely enforcing rules set by top management and has no say in them.

Many also argued that most restaurants in Malaysia don’t allow non-paying customers to stay on the premises, with most saying it’s loitering. Others commented that the mother should follow the rules of the restaurant instead of acting entitled because they’re a customer. Some also contended that McDonald’s is under a global boycott, so Amora’s video doesn’t paint her in a good light either way.

This issue is a good reminder that regardless of where you are, there are rules that you have to follow – even if you are a customer. What are your thoughts on the situation? Do you think Amora had the right to stay? Or was the manager right to call her out?
