Many Malaysians are familiar with Datuk Jimmy Choo (周仰杰), whose designs are well-loved by celebrities and royalty. Given his status, meeting the famed designer would be an honour for many – and lucky for local influencer Edison Ang (洪伟邦), he got to meet and dine with him.
The influencer, known as one-half of the Malaysian Cousins (马来堂哥) duo, recently shared a video of his experience at Datuk Jimmy Choo’s JC Residence showroom. According to the video, Edison received a special invitation to meet the designer as part of a special banquet to promote Malaysian durian. The social media personality had recently ventured into the durian export business and provided durian for the event. Before meeting the renowned designer, Edison did a tour of JC Residence, which is only open to VVIPs.
Interestingly, there were many pictures of Dato’ Michelle Yeoh (楊紫瓊) inside the grand showroom. This is because the actress is a close friend of Datuk Jimmy Choo and often sports his works on the red carpet and in movies. During the tour, Edison could be seen in awe of all the luxurious jewellery and, at one point, even joked about having to sell more durian to afford a Jimmy Choo-designed item. The internet celebrity also introduced Datuk Jimmy’s mentee, Peony Sin, who designed his green songket suit for the meeting.
After the tour, Edison finally met Datuk Jimmy Choo, who also wore a songket blazer. The influencer couldn’t help but express his excitement, saying it was an honour to meet the designer. They then moved on to dinner, a French cuisine course meal. However, the main highlight was the desserts, which were French-inspired but featured durian, which Edison provided as the main ingredient.
Towards the end of the video, Edison spoke to Datuk Jimmy Choo about the meeting, which the designer said was an opportunity to promote local products. He also said that the younger generation, like Edison, played a vital role in promoting the local culture to the international stage. The two ended the video with the Malaysian Cousin’s catchphrase, “Malaysia Boleh”.
We’re sure the meeting with Datuk Jimmy Choo and the event has inspired Edison to work harder on his durian business. We hope to see his business flourish on the international stage.
