Raya is just around the corner and everyone has been rushing to buy their outfits for the festivities. Fashion brands and clothing stores have also been busy restocking their baju melayu, baju kurung and baju kebaya to meet customers’ overwhelming demands but sadly, the same cannot be said with some establishments.
Yesterday (Wednesday, 3rd April), influencer and entrepreneur Dakk Firman posted a video on his TikTok to share about the hardship he’s currently going through. The content creator expressed his disappointment that his brand Qhiam Clothing failed to sell as many baju melayu as he hoped for. “Maybe it’s my fault ’cause it’s my first time opening up a business and I didn’t think things through. I still have 30k clothes left and I’m not sure what to do with them,” he said.
The TikToker elaborated that the outfits he’s selling are not even expensive (RM189 being the most expensive) and cited luxury and leading brands as the reason that his products are not selling. “I don’t have a name so I can’t compete. I tried to follow the market price but it didn’t work. I tried lowering my prices; from RM189 to RM119 but I’m still losing the branded ones. This means people prioritise brand names rather than quality and prices. The word quality has lost its meaning nowadays,” he added.
Instead of sympathy, the business owner received backlash from netizens who called him out for guilt-tripping his audience. Some criticised him for blaming customers. Others insisted that brands don’t actually matter to most people as long as the price is reasonable and the quality is good. A few speculated that the video may be a cheap marketing strategy to attract customers. One added that other brands are more accessible as they have both an online and physical store for customers to view more details about their catalogue.
There were also those who were kind enough to offer actual business advice to the founder of Qhiam saying that he should’ve started his business on a smaller scale and that he could still make a profit by selling 3 pairs of the remaining 30k products for RM100. Dakk Firman posted a follow-up video later the same day to respond to the backlash he received. He thanked those who offered him genuine advice before hitting back at netizens who spread hate and slander against him. Just like the previous post, the latest one was also not well-received by many.
