(Video) Korean TikToker Compares Malaysian Prices Versus Korea After Price Hike

by Hype Desk

Due to inflation, prices all around the world have increased. In the past, a pack of nasi lemak would cost RM1, but people are now charging between RM1.50 – RM2. However, even with the price hike, things in Malaysia are still relatively cheaper compared to other countries.

Recently, a Korean living in Malaysia, named Seonma, shared on TikTok a video comparing the prices of daily essentials in Korea and Malaysia. The video gained traction soon after it was posted and became a hot topic of discussion among netizens.

In the video, the Korean beauty compared 4 different daily ‘essentials’ in both Malaysia and Korea. These 4 products and services include50 litres of petrol, 330ml of bottled Coca-Cola, an 8km taxi trip and a movie ticket.

For 50 litres of petrol, you have to pay RM107.50 in Malaysia versus RM277.50 in Korean. This is the reason why many Koreans opt for public transport rather than drive. Moving on, Seonma compared the prices of a 330ml bottle Coca-Cola. In Malaysia, you can buy a bottle of coke for RM2.60, whereas, a bottle cost RM5.80 in Korea. She quipped that it literally double in price, adding, “Okay… I will drink Coca-Cola in Malaysia only.”

The 3rd item on the list was an 8km taxi trip. If you’re living in Korean, you would have to pay RM46 for a taxi trip of 8km. On the other hand, a taxi trip of 8km only cost RM22.60 in Malaysia. Lastly, Seonma made a comparison between movie tickets in both countries. A single movie ticket costs RM15 in Malaysia but in Korea, it’s RM48, with a difference of RM33. This is merely the price of a 2D movie, whereas a 4D movie could cost up to RM83.

This is certainly eye-opening when it comes to learning about the price differences in both countries. Quite a few of netizens commented that we should not compare the price directly since the average income in Malaysia and Korean differ.

  • “It’s not that Korean prices are expensive, (it’s just) RM is low.”
  • “Given that the average Korean earns more than twice compared to an average Malaysian, Korean is definitely cheaper.”
  • “Haha, small difference for food and big difference in salary.”
  • “A dollar for a dollar. Comparing will only give you a headache.”
