What was a fun event turned into a sad occasion. As fans at Mexico’s AXE Ceremonia music festival were gearing up to see some of their favourite musicians, including K-pop group TOMORROW BY TOGETHER/TXT (투모로우바이투게더), a freak accident led to the deaths of two photographers.
According to news outlets, the tragedy occurred on 5th April 2025 while musician Meme del Real was performing. A crane at the venue collapsed on two individuals, later identified as photographers for the Spanish-language media outlet Mr Indie. The two victims were transported to the hospital but were pronounced dead upon arrival. Following the accident, local authorities cancelled the second day of the music festival (6th April 2025).
Upon hearing the news, many music fans extended their condolences to the victims and their loved ones. As one of the event’s headliners, K-pop group TXT also sent their condolences to the victims through a Twitter post. MOAs (TXT fans) from across the world echoed the message, even offering to donate to the families of the victims and others affected by the accident.
In addition to the post, fans noticed that all members of the K-pop group wore black at the airport when flying back to South Korea. Since wearing black is a sign of mourning, many believed the group were showing respect to the deceased through their attire. The group received praise for their silent gesture. However, some netizens criticised the fans for mobbing the members at the airport, arguing that it was insensitive to chase after idols while they were in mourning.
Mr Indie has since shared a post on Instagram to pay tribute to its two photographers. A few other AXE Ceremonia performers also offered their condolences to the victims, including British singer Charli XCX and American pop band The Marías. For those wondering, some of the musical acts scheduled to perform on Day 2 of AXE Ceremonia include rappers Tyler, The Creator and Lil Yachty.
