No one said being a student was cheap – and given that many students don’t have a full-time job, it’s normal to rely on allowances from their parents to help them get through each month. But how much should a university student receive?
A tweet by @/ricxxxkiddo brought up the topic of allowance after tweeting a video by PMB Investment with the captions, “When you were still studying (in university), how much was your monthly allowance?”. In the video, first released in late November, university students in the Kuala Lumpur area were asked by a host how much they think university students should receive for their monthly allowance. Many of the answers were above RM1,000, with one student answering RM800.
Semua atas RM1000. Waktu korang study dulu, berapa duit belanja korang untuk sebulan? pic.twitter.com/xcjIanRli8

Many former students shared their answers, some even detailing what they spent during their student days. Some said they received only a few hundred from their parents but relied on extra funding from their scholarships like PTPTN and MARA. A few even said they got part-time jobs during their student days, which provided more money for their daily expenses.
The video also had some showing disbelief over the expected allowance, saying that RM1,000 is too much for a university student. Some even questioned what the students spend on every month that would require so much money. As many believed the allowances would come from the parents, some said it would be burdensome for the parents to provide over at least RM1,000 each month.
However, some noted that the students in the video may have higher commitments, given that they study and live in the city. Some also said inflation has affected the prices of daily necessities, making them more expensive than they used to be. Others also pointed out that the lifestyle of an average university student has drastically changed, so they might require more money to keep up with their lifestyles and peers.

What do you think about the video? Do you believe RM1,500 is too much for a university student? Or is it justified?
