While there are plenty of tourist attractions in each Malaysian state, there’s no denying that they need major repairs and maintenance. Dongbei Xuan (东北萱) is a travel content creator based in Kedah who went on a one-day trip around Penang to do some sightseeing.

In her video, she showed off the many places she visited, only using public transportation. She started her journey from Kedah, taking the train to Penang. Once she was in the state, she got on the ferry to head over to Penang Island.

Once she arrived on Penang Island, Dongbei Xuan immediately headed to the local scenic spots, including Chew Jetty, the Georgetown street art, Kek Lok Si Temple and Penang Hill. While she did enjoy herself at the various tourist hotspots, even stopping to check out the local delicacies, she noticed that some of the attractions looked like they were overdue for some repairs.

She highlighted the famous George Town murals, which were faded and chipping off the walls. She also pointed out that the umbrellas hung above the street at Umbrella Alley were broken and had holes. Dongbei Xuan continued to lament about the tourist attractions, saying, “Everyone comes to visit and take photos. How can we take photos when the umbrellas are broken?”

Many locals agree with her statement, admitting the tourist attractions lack proper maintenance and need repairs. Some also expressed disappointment in the condition of the attractions, saying they would be embarrassed to photograph at the tourist spot. However, some thanked Dongbei Xuan for highlighting the many Penang attractions and even suggesting more for her to check out the next time.

  • The scenic spots should be repaired. It’s too old and the murals are falling off. Every time I take the group, I’m a little disappointed. I really don’t want to take photos anymore.
  • Thank you for the introduction!
  • Next time, introduce the Waterfall Hill Temple (Balathandayuthapani Temple).
  • Lots of places need repairs! The government needs to work harder.
  • Travel spots really need to be repaired, it really sucks.
  • Thanks for sharing!
