Each person has their unique way of expressing themselves, and for many, tattoos have become an artful means of self-expression. MIYAVI (雅), the star musician, has a meaningful story behind the tattoo adorning his back. It serves as a reflection of his familial bonds and personal identity.
MIYAVI or Takamasa Ishihara (石原 崇雅) is a musician, actor, and philanthropist, bridging cultures across the globe with his music and message. The tattoos he has on his body serve as a testament to his purposeful and emotionally charged approach to life. In an interview with Lifestyle Asia’s Tattoo Talks, he delved into the story behind the “李” character tattooed on his back.
The guitarist’s largest tattoo, crafted by Kotaro Sato, features the character “李” surrounded by the Heart Sutra, symbolising his Korean last name “Lee,” inherited from his Korean-Japanese father from Jeju Island. Raised in Japan with a mixed heritage, societal stigmas and a strained relationship with his father kept him disconnected from his Korean roots.
The 42-year-old also revealed that it wasn’t until he became a father himself that he felt the urge to embrace his paternal lineage, leading to a newfound appreciation for his Korean heritage which prompted him to get the tattoo. “I never knew that I was part Korean, my parents never told me. I got this tattoo as a reminder of the Korean blood that’s in me and it’s like fuel for me as a musician to always keep improving and pave the way,” he explained.
Recognising his father’s impact on his life, the musician adopted a new perspective, incorporating this journey into his art. As a father of three, he realised his frustration with his dad stemmed from poor communication. Despite respecting his father’s lifestyle, MIYAVI pledged not to repeat those errors, prioritising clear communication in raising his children.
