Back in 2023, netizens travelling towards Genting Highlands noticed the construction of a toll gantry, sparking rumours that vehicles would soon have to pay to enter the hill station. Two years later, the public finally got an answer.
On 13th November 2025 (Thursday), Genting Malaysia Berhad announced that vehicles using Jalan Genting Highlands will soon be charged a private toll fee. The casino and theme park operator built the private road on the mountainous terrain to provide safe access to Resorts World Genting and the other mountain destinations beyond Genting Malaysia’s properties.

According to Genting Malaysia, the toll fee is to cover the steep and escalating maintenance costs for the 24km private road, which the company has borne since the 1960s. The company explained that imposing a fee is the most sustainable option, based on the “user pays” principle, to cover the cost of upkeep, repairs, maintenance and unforeseen incidents.
The company hasn’t announced the cost of the toll or when it will begin charging vehicles. It’s also unclear whether the charges would be uniformly applied across all types of vehicles, such as private cars and tour buses. However, there were previous claims that vehicles would only be charged once when entering Genting Highlands, and not when exiting.

Online, the public shares their reaction to the new toll, expressing mixed feelings. Some approved of the toll, noting that the fee can help improve road conditions. However, others lamented that it’s another inconvenient charge to visit the already-pricey tourist destinations. Some even poked fun at Genting Malaysia for not making enough profit.
There are rumours that the toll will begin operations at the start of the new year, on 1st January 2026 (Thursday). What are your thoughts on this? Here’s a look at the toll:
