Finding little easter eggs of Malaysia on the global stage is always a fun surprise for every Malaysian out there. Whether it may be the sighting of famous landmarks or mentions of the durian, it’s truly a nationwide experience to feel proud to see our country represented worldwide.

However, it’s not often we see our local celebs making a physical appearance on Japanese and Korean productions. Despite the rarity of finding Malaysian cameos in JK-dramas and films, there are still a select lucky few! Here are Malaysian stars who have played minor roles in Japanese or Korean projects:

1. Amy Mastura- The Files of Young Kindaichi: Prison School Murder Mystery

Renowned Malaysian singer and actress Amy Mastura played as an extra in the Japanese telemovie special, “The Files of Young Kindaichi: Prison School Murder Mystery. In the episode, she played a lady selling toys in front of KLCC and even had a dialogue with the main lead. In a shocking plot twist of the scene, Amy Mastura “peeled” her face off to reveal the antagonist Yoichi Takato behind the mask.

In 2020, the highly successful South Korean zombie thriller “Train to Busan” released its sequel, “Peninsula”. In the film, Malaysian actress Bella Rahim had a minor role as Major Jane, the head of the United Nations from Malaysia. In her scene, Rahim rescues Jung-seok, Min-jung, and Min-jung’s daughters as they are transported by helicopter from the sight. While it was a brief appearance, the actress did have a short dialogue.

In a scene from the 2019 South Korean drama, “Jazzy Misfits”, Malaysian-born artist and K-pop producer, DJ SP3CK acts as an extra. More exciting for locals is that he even served a Malay dialogue in the drama! The scene depicts Sun-deok’s mother, played by Jo Minsu (조민수), banging on a neighbour’s house which she mistook as her daughter’s. The Malaysian DJ then can be seen opening the door with frustration as he says, “Pagi-pagi buat bising apa ni?”.
