If you frequented Genting Highlands in the 2000s, you may be familiar with the older cable car line, the Genting Skyway. While most visitors now can only experience the newer Awana Skyway, there is still the rare opportunity to ride the older aerial line.

TikTok user Raissa_Ziyya shared their experience aboard the old Genting Skyway cable car. In the video, the user showed the entire ride, which they deemed scary due to the route and gondola. According to the TikToker, the ride was also longer and steeper than the newer Awana Skyway, which added a bit more of a scary element. In the captions, the TikTok user also revealed that the experience was only available for a week when the Awana Skyway service was down for maintenance. They also said that the experience is perfect for those born in the 90s who want to relive their childhood memories.

If you’re curious, the Genting SkyWay takes riders from Gohtong Jaya Station to Highlands Station. On the other hand, the Awana Skyway route is from Awana Station to SkyAvenue Station, with a free stop midway at Chin Swee Station. The Genting SkyWay route is only about five minutes longer than the Awana SkyWay but is steeper due to the mapping. Before the current 8-to-10-seater gondolas, the cable car service used larger gondolas that passengers could stand in.

Many netizens have reacted to the video, sharing their thoughts about the older cable car service. Some were surprised that there is an alternative cable car service, to which the TikTok user explained that it only opens when the main Awana SkyWay is under service. Many former Genting visitors and employees reminisced about their experience with the older cable car, which they miss as it’s harder to ride it now. Some also questioned if the animal statues were still part of the route, as it was an attraction to the ride when it was active.

Have you ever ridden the Genting SkyWay? And how would you compare it to the Awana SkyWay? Do you agree with the TikTok video that it’s scarier?
