Malaysian-born comedian Ronny Chieng (钱信伊) has become a household name in the United States, entertaining people with his jokes and stand-up specials. Recently, the actor shared a new update to his life: he’s now officially a citizen of the United States.

“The Daily Show” recently uploaded footage from one of its recent tapings. In the video, Ronny was filming the episode when actor Bill Murray suddenly appeared from backstage. The legendary actor then revealed that Ronny had just received the news that he passed his citizenship application and is now a US citizen. The two then shared a handshake and a hug, and Ronny thanked Bill for the congratulations.

As Bill returned backstage, he cheekily saluted Ronny, who returned the gesture in smiles. After receiving cheers from the audience, Ronny joked about his citizenship interview, saying, “Worst interview ever!”. He continued, “Yeah, it is a crazy experience to become a U.S. citizen the same day you’re supposed to interview Bill Murray.”. The comedian also briefly revealed the interview process, quipping he had to answer 100 questions about the country.

For those unaware, Ronny was born in Johor but was raised in Singapore and the US. He also spent a decade in Australia to attend university and graduate school. The comedian currently lives in New York City with his wife, Hannah Pham. Unfortunately, with his newly-obtained US citizenship, Ronny will have to give up his Malaysian citizenship because Malaysia doesn’t recognise dual citizenship.

Regardless, many netizens have congratulated Ronny on officially becoming a US citizen. Some also pointed out how the comedian seemed so excited to be applauded by a renowned star like Bill Murray. A few also joked that he can continue making hard-hitting commentary about the country without worrying about being deported. However, others quipped that it might not be the best time to be an American citizen.

Nevertheless, we would also like to congratulate Ronny on getting his US citizenship. Watch the moment between him and Bill Murray below:
