As the Lunar New Year celebrations continue, many more Chinese and Hong Kong celebrities share their New Year wishes on social media. However, Bobby Au-yeung’s (歐陽震華) recent New Year’s message sparked interest for another reason.
Earlier this week, Bobby took to Douyin to share his Lunar New Year greetings with fans and netizens. In the video, the actor dressed as “God of Wealth” and held on to a giant gold ingot, while singing the iconic CNY track, “The God of Wealth”. After singing a few lines of the song, he then wished netizens a joyous New Year celebration in Mandarin, albeit with a heavy Cantonese accent.

Despite the cheerful new year greeting, what caught netizens’ attention was Bobby’s increasingly thin physique. In the comments section, many expressed concern over his skinnier appearance, noting that his signature round face had disappeared. Some even shared photos of the star’s old “God of Wealth” cosplays, highlighting a stark contrast from his previously chubbier image.
Bobby’s sudden weight loss also prompted a few jokes from netizens. Some quipped that the “skinny God of Wealth” is a sign of a declining economy, urging Bobby to gain more weight so that the economy can improve. Others even joked that they thought the greeting was an AI-generated (artificial intelligence) video, until Bobby spoke and exposed his Cantonese-Mandarin accent.

It’s worth mentioning that Bobby has lost significant weight in recent years, slowly moving away from his old chubbier image. Fans have previously expressed concern about his thinner physique, wondering if it was a health-conscious decision or the effect of an unpublicised illness. The 65-year-old has had many bouts with his health in the past, including once falling into a coma due to acute pneumonia.
However, Bobby may be losing weight to better manage his well-being after facing so many health issues in the past. Regardless, we hope the actor is healthy and happy.
