One of the hottest debates among K-pop fans is which idols have the best live vocals. Over the years, many have praised BLACKPINK for their vocal abilities during performances, so it was certainly surprising when member Lisa (리사) faced accusations of lip-syncing during her solo projects.
Previously, some speculated that she was not singing live during her “New Woman”/”Rockstar” performance at the recent Video Music Awards until it was proven through fancams that the backing tracks were simply too loud. Unfortunately, the idol has faced the same allegations again during her latest gig. Here’s what happened:

BLACKPINK Lisa was one of the acts who performed at the Global Citizen Festival in New York where she debuted her latest single titled “Moonlit Floor”. Although fans were excited to finally hear the new track, which is rumoured to be about her boyfriend Frederic Arnault, many couldn’t help but wonder if she was actually singing during that particular performance.
As seen in the video below, there were moments during the performance when the 27-year-old’s voice was clearly audible despite her mouth not being near the handheld microphone. There were also instances when she wasn’t even moving her lips, yet the vocals continued to play. Even if this was another case of the loud backing track, the singer’s live vocals were unfortunately drowned out, making it hard to convince that she was actually singing.

As a result, many have criticised the K-pop star for her alleged lip-syncing. Some commenters suggested that she should have made more effort to lip-sync convincingly. Others defended Lisa, asserting that she was singing live but that the backing track was overwhelming, pointing out that no trained idol would deliberately refrain from moving their lips if they were lip-syncing. One claimed to be an audience that evening and said Lisa was singing live during her set.
While Lisa faced backlash for allegedly lip-syncing, this K-pop group was criticised for their live vocals. ILLIT (아일릿) recently performed at the KCON Germany 2024 event, and during their encore, the idols sang their hit song “Magnetic.” After clips of their performance went viral, fans praised the girls for their improvement, noting their growing confidence. However, many felt that their live singing was just the bare minimum, suggesting that the group still lacked stage presence.

This just goes to show that netizens will never be satisfied regardless if the idols were actually singing or not. Do you think the backlash against these celebs was justified?
